#vineyardpractices but from the series "you never #vineyardpractices but from the series "you never knew". Last year I replanted a small part of the vineyard, on the same hill, in the upper part some 'sélection massale' of red varietals from the oldest vineyards (Barbera, Freisa, Uvalino et al) and Chardonnay & Grignolino in the lower part (featured), a total of 0,5 ha more or less. In July despite the very dry weather there was a lot of grass in the new vineyard so I decided to remove it. A tractor passed between the rows and cut it. Between the vines it had to be removed by hand, with a hoe. So we started from the upper part one Friday afternoon and uncovered all the uphill vineyard. By Sunday morning the sun burnt all the Barbera, all of it (and just it!). Not knowing how the Grignolino and the Chardonnay will react I cancelled the works for Monday and the grass in the lower vineyard remained there until today (2nd photo). It totally covered all the young vines. When we removed it, as you can see (1st photo), the young vines seem to have grown well and most of them are alive. Another very important issue, the soil under the grass and between the vines was humid (!!!) 1 cm under the surface (we haven't had significant rain here since December) whilst the upper vineyard looks like a beach (pure sand, see 3rd video) and the young vines are underdeveloped. 
We'll need to finetune all the practices in the vineyard, especially if the dry & hot weather keeps on.

2020 Quila MX-Quila

Der MX-Quila ist aus der Traubensorte Moretto gekeltert.

In den 1930er Jahren hat ein junger Piemontesischer Winzer Moretto mit nach Mexiko genommen — er war aber als Nebbiolo gekennzeichnet. Deshalb wurde diese Traubensorte in den besten Lagen angebaut und gekeltert wie ein Barolo. Das hat Moretto zur erfolgreichsten Italienischen Rebsorte im Ausland gemacht — 150 ha in Mexiko, deshalb sagt man auch Mexican Nebbiolo. 

Bisso @quila.bio hat den letzten bekannten Moretto-Weinberg im Piemont gefunden und macht nun diesen fruchtigen, strukturierten und einzigartigen Wein, den es so noch nie gegeben hat.

Bric🔸Bissarello 2020, 93/100: «In terms of aroma, the wine is – quite surprisingly – much lighter than expected, has a wildly surprisingly complex and exciting aroma of an otherwise slightly rural grape, which often produces slightly boring wines. This one is definitely not, because there are cherries, kirsch, strawberries, dried roses and flowers, light licorice and vanilla. The barrel sweetness rounds off the bouquet really well.

However, the taste is lighter, loaded with some watery cherries, juicy strawberries, raspberries, dry and fine-grained tannins, a really good acidity. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted Dolcetto with such ease, which really suits the otherwise easy going grape. It is furiously fine and elegant Dolcetto, so Houlberg is happy. 93 points».

Jeff🔸Pramas 2020: «Yum… seems almost like a slightly fleshy Langhe Nebbiolo, still with all the glorious notes of leather, dried rose petals, violets, is quite perfumed and floral, has a slightly medicinal expression, while the fruit is strawberries, light and sour cherries and an ultra-fine, light and stringent acid.
The taste is quite dry with cranberries, currants, juicy cherries, a dry bitterness and juicy sweetness, has great juiciness and licorice notes, a delicious and round taste. It may not have the bright, austere tannin bite of Nebbiolo, is more fun, rustic and meaty, but damn does it taste good. 93 points».

Ulrik Houlberg Iversen (@houlberg ) is a wine crit Ulrik Houlberg Iversen (@houlberg ) is a wine critic from Denmark. He’s been following my route as a winemaker for quite a long time and that fact makes me even happier as I found three extensive articles about my new red wine releases of 2022 on his website (houlberg.dk). I can not read in Danish, but even through google-translator I can feel the expressiveness of his language, the deep knowledge and the passion for wine that Ulrik interlaces in his texts.
Here’s what Ulrik says about our red, that he rated highest:
MX🔸Quila 2020, 95/100: «Split my bream sails, Captain Haddock would have said, because it smells absolutely impressive with tanned leather, roses, violets, minerals and has a ripe fruit with weight, black cherries, raspberries, blackberries and deep intensity. There is a little body in the wine and thus not quite like Nebbiolo, although it also has this dry and delicious nerve. In the mouth, the wine also has a slightly darker side than Nebbiolo, and the tannins neither paralyze nor shout wildly in the mouth, although there is still a splash in the wine. However, the tannins give a good bite and they creep up slowly and settle almost unnoticed on the teeth. There are strawberries, raspberries, currants, plenty of Piedmontese acidity and this fresh, austere, direct and bright fruit… very dry and impressive, so 95 points».

The closer the end of the year the more generous The closer the end of the year  the more generous and numerous the wine awards. This time our Moretto (aka "Mexican Nebbiolo") was listed among the Top-100 of @winemag.it for 2023. The edition is lead by @davidebortone.wine , one of the youngest Italian wine critics, that somehow manages to extract adrenaline (or other substances) out of wine, which help him travel, write and taste wine 24/7 all 365 days of the year. In Davide's selection there are lots of wineries that you haven't heard of (like ours) but also well known ones, big or small , like Ca' Rugate, Librandi, Villa Matilde, Marisa Cuomo, Brunelli, La Togata as well as Sartori, San Marco, Borgogno and Mandrarossa to name a few. It's the wine in the glass that shall impress you, not its production philosophy, Davide declares, saying "No" to oeno-racism & forced inclusivity. 
Here's how Davide describes our Moretto: 
🔸«Ever heard of Moretto? Probably not. This is the name of the grape, very rare, coming from the vineyards of "Quila", an oenological project by Bisso Atanasov. We are in the Langhe. On the nose, flowers and fruit would suggest a perfectly ripe Nebbiolo. But on the palate, the clear acid imprint and the lower tannin content distinguish even better the differences between the two grape varieties, once confused. Very young wine, the result of a heroic recovery project by the passionate winemaker adopted by Piedmont. We need to give it time, but it will be like drinking a glass of history.»

Ci andiamo per la prima volta, ci hanno dato una posizione centralissima (non so per bene o per male, vediamo): C64 nel Padiglione 1 ("Ci sei qua tu?" - così ve lo ricordate). Porterò tutti i vini che ho in cantina, ma questi tre - in quantità limitata, prima di tutto per la scarsa produzione (ca 300 bottiglie ciascuno) e poi perché anche essendo le nuove annate che di solito escono in primavera, sono quasi tutti già "prenotati".

🔸FAL*Quila Piemonte DOC Favorita Moscato 2022 petnat - la seconda annata di questo vino sperimentale fatto di [F]avorita dell'[A]lta [L]anga fermentata in "orange" con una piccola aggiunta di Moscato. Forse uno dei primi vini Pienonte DOC bivarietali (introdotti nel 2020);
🔸Jeff Pramas Langhe DOC Rosso 2021. Un Nebbiolo "ripassato" sulle bucce pressate di un'altra varietà.

At the end of October “Civiltà del bere”, one of the oldest Italian wine magazines, publishes its traditional aggregated ratings of the top Italian wines of the year, based on the highest accolades of the leading local wine guides (i.e. the winners of “3 bicchieri”, “5 grappoli”, “4 viti”, “il Sole di Veronelli” etc.). Apart from this for the 5th year in a row the magazine organizes its own wine competition, called WOW!, the winners of which also participate in the roadshows along with the top Italian wines mentioned above throughout the year that follows. This year 1050 wines took part in the competition and were one-handedly tasted as in the 2 previous covid editions by the “man in charge” Alessandro Torcoli (@torcoliwine). The best performing regions were Veneto (147 medals), Tuscany (113), Piedmont (89) & Sicily (87). For the first year a separate “best in show” for wines with Gold medals under €10 was introduced and surprisingly Piedmont is the leader there with 7 medals. Out of all wines 437 won a Gold medal (95-100 points + up to 5 points for typicity), of which 45 – from Piedmont. It’s a great pleasure for me to announce that my Bric Bissarello 2020 (old vines Dolcetto based Langhe Rosso) won one of those 45 medals! (continues in the comments)⏩
